Royal Mail Price Rises – and how to reduce them.
Royal Mail has announced it will be implementing a significant increase to its prices, with Advertising Mail services for Letters increasing by between 10% and 12.5%, Business Mail for Letters by 19-36.5% and Large Letters by 11-15.5%).
While Royal Mail say it’s a necessary increase to offset the cost of maintaining its nationwide delivery network – as well as presumably help offset the £800m it says it’s lost over the last four years – it’s a punchy price rise that could potentially knock the wind out of some marketing campaigns.
The good news is that higher postage costs don’t have to mean higher campaign costs. There are several ways to offset these increases without compromising campaign effectiveness.
If you’re clever about how your campaigns are designed and produced you can make your mailing work harder to deliver improved impact and higher response rates.
So, here’s Webmart’s guide to optimising your mailing campaigns to help offset the extra costs that are heading our way.

Of course, your first port of call should be to speak to your friendly Webmarteer for bespoke advice in optimising your campaigns and offsetting price increases. Contact Webmart here.
what can i do to offset the royal mail price increases?
Here’s our 7 point plan to help you reduce campaign costs and boost response rates.
1. clean data reduces spend
Before touching the artwork, clean your data. New and fresh data that’s targeting a receptive audience is the best way to make every pound count.
What to do: Remove duplicates, opt-outs, deceased records and people who have moved. Correct incomplete addresses, use only up-to-date lists and append fresh data. It works every time and is a super cost-effective first step.
2. Focus on cost per response
The cheapest mailing isn’t always the most cost-effective mailing. A postcard might save a few pence but if nobody responds, it’s not doing the job. JICMAIL’s latest Response Rate Tracker found that A4 mailers produced response rates around 2.7 times higher than postcards.
What to do: Tap into the resources around you for advice on which format is right for the job. JICMAIL Platinum members (like Webmart) have access to detailed insight into the formats, designs and response rates past campaigns have achieved and have all that insight at their fingertips to pass on to you.
3. design within postage rules
Postage options need to be considered before the creative is designed. Don’t fall into that old classic trap of getting your campaign ready and then thinking ‘now, what are our postage options?’ Always work things the other way round – distribution first, then artwork.
What to do: Consider dimensions, thickness, weight, address positioning, envelope. Well designed mail gives you control over mail prices you’ll be hitting, letting you chase savings where they’re available. Also, get your agency involved at the very inception of your campaign as they’ll be able to lay out all your options up front.
4. find mailing incentives too
Royal Mail price hikes can be a costly annoyance, squeezing budgets right when you least need it. But did you know there are Royal Mail incentives to be had too?
What to do: Incentives can be far reaching across a range of mailing products. They can really help keep your costs down, but they can change too. So stay in touch with your Royal Mail (or Webmart) account manager to uncover the latest incentives and they’ll keep you up to date with new incentives when they come along.
5. Right mail for the job
Not every prospect needs to receive a fully personalised, individually addressed pack. It’s all about understanding your target then choosing the right solution.
What to do: Choose from Direct Mail which is particularly great for retention, reactivation and high value prospects. Partially Addressed Mail means you can target prospects at postcode level without buying a named list. Door Drops are great for targeting geographic locations when you don’t have a personalised list. And Programmatic mail uses triggered customer data points to personalise mail before sending so it’s great for maximising responses from premium customers. Each mail type has different strengths and price points.
6. best supplier for each project
Just because a supplier says it can handle a job, it really doesn’t mean it’s the best fit. You’d be amazed how much shopping around between print suppliers and mailing houses can find savings. There are production processes to be streamlined, headaches to be avoided real savings to be made if you find the best supplier for your mail marketing project.
What to do: Make sure you’re working with someone who can match your project with the best processes to keep costs down. And make sure you go out to several suppliers to check you’re finding the best value in the market – though, as usual, do your own due diligence too to make sure you’re not chasing savings to the detriment of quality.
7. it’s all about response mechanisms
It’s easy to get sooo focused on delivering the campaign that the response mechanisms don’t get the love they deserve.
What to do: Double check all your response mechanisms are compelling and your processes are fit for purpose. Is the offer enticing? Can that voucher be easily redeemed? Is the campaign timing right? Is the store ready to redeem your vouchers or is your website response capture process working? It’s super important to jot down every response route and to ensure the process is effortless and pain-free for customers. It’s often worthwhile hiring a project manager to manage the actual campaign production, leaving marketers free to focus on creative, response rates and campaign metrics too.
