Webmarteer Diaries: Ollie’s Work Experience

Diary of a Webmarteer - Ollie's marketing work experience diary at integrated marketing agency Webmart

The team here at Webmart is a diverse bunch. We have the outgoing, chatty ones. The quiet, hidden-talent ones. The techy, ‘how did you even think of that?!’ ones. And recently, we had a ‘here for one week only’ one!

Ollie joined us for his work experience week to soak up what life at an integrated marketing agency is like. And boy did he do us proud. From exhibition set up to industry research and project work, Ollie really threw himself into Webmart life. Below is his experience in his own words.

Monday

Hello! My name’s Ollie and this week, I’ve been completing work experience with the marketing department here at Webmart. With Tom Maskill as my supervisor, I’ve been helping with exciting new projects coming up for Webmart, and a few more bits along the way.

Monday started off with an introduction to Webmart and a meeting with myself and Tom about aims for this week and what I already knew. It was then time for me to start on my first research project which took up the rest of the day.

Tuesday

Tuesday began at what felt like the crack of dawn. 7:30 am. It was marketingSHOWCASE Day at the Theatre of Dreams (or what some might call nightmares after United’s performance this season) Old Trafford. Tom, Maisie and I met Alex who amazingly set up our entire stand whilst we were sat in typical M62 bumper to bumper traffic somewhere over the Pennines.

For those who aren’t aware, marketingSHOWCASE is a great event with lots of other marketing companies to learn from the talks, network and get to interact with other businesses and potential clients.

Tom’s presentation on “The psychology of why we say ‘yes’” for me was honestly my favourite presentation of the day. It’s so interesting to see it from both the receiver’s point of view and the producer’s perspective of how to gain people’s attention through different ways and means especially as someone relatively new to the world of marketing.

The rest of the day was spent visiting other talks, talking to people about what Webmart does and giving them an insight into why I’m here with Webmart, what I’m interested in and the bits I’m doing with school to boost the marketing department. It was a really fun day to be a part of and of course, no day would be complete without some heavy lifting of boxes back to the car!

Wednesday

Having driven to work on Wednesday morning, there was the exciting premise of ‘play time’ with some fire extinguishers as it was our fire training day.

Although, the excitement soon left when the ever so slightly scary sound of a 3 hour training morning WITH NO PLAY TIME echoed round the room (childish, I know). Although, I suppose one benefit is that I’m now a certified fire warden. Good CV building stuff eh?

The rest of my day was spent organising meetings, continuing my research, and preparing my presentation.

Although, the highlight of my day has to be the infamous “Sausage and Gravy Sandwich” from Whykes Sandwich Shop in Darton. OH MY DAYS it was gorgeous.

Thursday

And so Thursday came and it was sadly my last day at the office.

My day started off with a meeting with one of my teachers who came to see how my placement was going and what I’d been up to. As Tom and I both attended QEGS, Mr Lambert was one of Tom’s teachers too when he was at school.

I spent the rest of the morning finishing up on my project and getting ready for my presentation this afternoon to share what I’d learnt with Tom.

11 o’clock struck and I could feel the rumbling inside from the thought that today was a special lunch. The infamous “Pie Pub”. The crew fuelled up with a steak pie each before heading back to the office where I prepped for my meeting, which went really well. We found out lots of information that can help us with our upcoming project.

Friday

Unfortunately, Friday meant it was my last day working as a Webmarteer for a week. However, a supplier visit with Richard (My dad) ended the week brilliantly. I loved the tour we got from Mike, seeing the Web printers and being able to see the different designs that can be done, even ones that are in the works for Webmart.

It was then out for lunch with Richard and Mike to a lovely country pub and before I knew it, my fantastic week with Webmart had come to an end. But it’s been a great one, without a doubt!

I’ve loved my time at Webmart. Thank you to everyone who made me feel so welcome and made this week a really memorable one! And a massive thank you to Tom and Maisie who I worked with throughout the week on my project and the marketingSHOWCASE day! It’s been amazing to work at Webmart and I can’t thank you enough for the experience!

I wish everyone at Webmart all the best and again, thank you!
